Whacky Weekend

It's going to be a whacky weekend here in the Land of the SUV.  Surfpup has a soccer tournament in Coronado, Srfgrrrl has a social calendar that includes Improv, babysitting, and a Christmas party.  SurfSweetie has to prepare for her final, is attending the graduation ceremony at her school to see some of her friends graduate. I'm sure that Bob It's calendar is just as full as everyone else's.  Wheew!!!!!

My kids are geeks

This is not a bad thing.  I repeat, this is not a bad thing. Actually it is a good thing.  My kids have all grown up; with computers. No, wait a minute, they literally teethed on mice. Every one of the kids in my house has had access to a computer since the time they were toddlers. Well, maybe not Surfpunk in his early years or Bob-it, but they are  a geeks nonetheless. Surfgrrl, Surfdude, Surfpup and even Surfpunk are all geeks. To them a computer is not a mysterious black box that it was to the people of my generation, rather it is an appliance which connects them with the larger world.  IM, email, chatrooms youtube, myspace are all part of the world that they have grown up in.  Surfgrrl is into Gaia, IM and photobucket where she uploads her art. By the way, have I mentioned that Surfgrrrl is a great artist.  Surfpup puts on youtube and Runescape simultaneously.Surfpunk comes over all the time and shows me youtube clips of shows that his band puts on. These interactions with the on line world represent an evolution in the human experience.  We do not appreciate the changes that will come in society do the this dynamic inter-connectedness. These changes breach the nationalistic political paradigm that has persisted for the last several centuries. Earlier today I read an article on the prevalence of wireless technology in third-world countries and its spawning of a new infrastructure beyond the reach of multi-national corporations and nation-states (I am too lazy at the moment to find and link to the piece-my bad!).  The implications for the future of society are profound.  While many of the children will fall sway to the forces of intolerance and authoritarianism due to an inability to appreciate or accept diversity, many more of the worlds children will be able to break the bonds of parochialism and to see themselves part of a world culture. Think of the dreams of the Apollo astronauts as they saw the world as a small ball in space. Lets pray for the success of the geeks of the world.

JoJo meets the "Killer Gopher"

Sometimes you can't make things up that are as absurd as real life.  JoJo our large orange tabbyDsc_0007 is viscious until confronted by, well, just about anything. Today, a gopher popped up right in front of him almost begging to be eaten.  JoJo had no idea what to do. Ultimately, we were trying to catch the gopher witn some tongs, it ended up hiding from us under JoJo.

I feed this cat for what??????

I'm Back

Nobody probably noticed but I have not been posting for the last month.  Sweety has been home between Spring and Summer terms.  When my Sweetie is home I hang with her as much as possible.

Another reason that I have not been posting is that the muse just hasn't been with me. I have been lurking a lot. Plenty of important stuff has gone down over the last month or so, the Gonzo implosion, the continued downward spiral of our clusterfuck in Iraq. I was particularly pissed off about the Iraq Supplemental capitulation. Talk about tone-deaf politicians. So, with that  I'M BAAACK!  heh...heh...

Royals in the Tournament

The Royals were in a tournament this weekend. We finished third with two wins and one tie.  The team we tied advanced as they gave up fewer goals than we did. The kids played great.

Surfpup was outstanding in goal:

Donato had another outstanding tournament

Herman, Donato's brother, broke through and scored two goals

Easter Dinner in the Land of the SUV

Dsc_0005 Happy Easter from the Land of the SUV. Todays dinner was wonderful. We had Roast Pork Tenderloin with Carmelized Onions and Golden Grapes,  Mashed potatoes with  brie, goat cheese and Pecorino  Romano, fresh asparagus, and a broccoli mushroom and cheddar quiche.  After dinner we had strawberry shortcake and whipped cream (homemade of course) and vanilla bean cheesecake with almond shortbread crust (also homemade)  which was just killer.  Surfpunk and Lola came and ate as well as our friend Roger, and SurfSweeties stepfather.

The two holidays that I love the best are Thanksgiving and Easter. I love Thanksgiving because it calls on us to give thanks for our blessings.  This is something that we do not allow ourselves time to do often enough.

I love Easter because it is the celebration of rebirth.  In that rebirth is offered a chance at redemption.  I don't think that there are many of us who have achieved any sort of age who don't feel a need to maybe have an act for which they are responsible redeemed. This is one of the most powerful draws of the Christian Church, the idea of forgiveness hence redemption.

Whether Christian or not, the idea of redemption should serve as a guiding principle for all of us.  I am not talking about facile verbal formulations uttered in ceremonial settings that serve to validate feelings of superiority, rather I am speaking of serious contemplation and repudiation of past error and dedication to the idea that although you cannot fix every problem you caused in this world, you can consistently apply your best efforts to make the world a better place. In the process you help yourself become a better person. Thus the redemption.

Happy Easter!

Garden_of_fearsThis is a painting that was created by Surfgrrrl.  I think it speaks for itself.  I also think it is really cool.
